WMS HQ WALES
WMS HQ Wales is located near Tregaron, in the county of Ceredigion, mid Wales, on the Western side of the Elan Valley uplands in the Cambrian Mountains . The topography of this beautiful area is ideally suited to firearms training where undisturbed hills and valleys enable you to shoot safely and discreetly over strategically placed reactive steel targets.
Our shooting areas here extend to some 4,500 acres giving us a multitude of choices of location and firing point depending on your goals, skills and the weather. This land we shoot over is owned by several local farmers with whom we have signed formal agreements to provide our training under lawful, insured and approved commercial operating procedures.
Training at WMS HQ Wales is provided on a whole day basis for individuals or groups with their own rifles who want to improve; for beginners or intermediates wanting to use our rifles and equipment, and for clients looking for an experience day.
Annually, we welcome clients to WMS HQ Wales from around the world. The journey is clearly worth the effort given the positive feedback we receive with people arriving as clients and leaving as friends.
Training days available: Bespoke Days for Private Clients on a one-to-one or two-to-one basis; Group Days and Masterclasses, Introductory and Family Experience Days, Experience Days, Professional Firearms Users training. All WMS training adheres to the ‘keep it simple’ principle and is respectful, patient and tailored to the client’s specific goals and learning style.
Shooting ranges and distances available:
The Hesketh Hut faces a quarry with targets starting at 100-150m for basic training and zeroing. Beyond, the hills offer limitless firing point possibilities, positions, angles and ranges from 100m to well over 1,700m. The hill tops offer spectacular shooting, views and the ultimate challenge for long-range shooters.
Targets: We use a combination of cardboard and steel targets, all fresh for the day and ready to give the feedback required to help you learn, progress and improve. The audio/visual feedback from the steel targets is incredibly useful to enhance understanding and drive learning at all ranges, beyond 100m. Many of the targets are life size facsimiles of the mammals you may be hunting. This helps with anatomy, aim points and learning ones limits, range, conditions and situation wise. We also have a moving target range at the Hesketh Hut offering a 50m track, speeds of 0-30kph and remote control to 200m+.
Calibres: if it can be legally owned in the UK, you can use it under our guidance and management at WMS Wales. Having said that, we are a training company and have noted the extreme conditions created by firing rifles with muzzle brakes, most notably in .50BMG. Hence, we have a voluntary moratorium on .50BMG for reasons of safety, hearing damage and harm to the training environment and local area. Clients wishing to train with rifles with muzzle brakes can be accommodated. As of 2022, we request that people with muzzle brakes do not join group days without prior agreement. Moderators or bare barrel only are preferred please.
We are fine with properly home loaded ammunition, expanding ammunition and lead-free bullet types. However anyone borrowing WMS rifles must only use commercial ammunition in them.
Facilities: Our field HQ is the Hesketh Hut on one side of our main shooting area. It is a place to meet, discuss safety, learn technique and prepare for the targets set in the surrounding landscape. We have four shooting benches, covered firing, a warm room/kitchen area and clean, simple, functional facilities. The Hesketh Hut can accommodate 10 people comfortably and offers a kitchen area and a portaloo with disabled access. We have shooting trailers to offer moveable covered firing as required and a further covered firing at the 850m firing point.
Meeting point: We can collect you from your local accommodation or will arrange a meeting point in the village of Pontrhydfendigaid. We can either take you to the range area in our 4×4 and then drop you back at your accommodation/vehicle after the day or you may wish to bring your vehicle to the range.
